چکیده

A key challenge in sharing oriented information management environments such as networks of heterogeneous autonomous database systems is to provide capabil ities to allow information units and resources to be exibly and dynamically com bined and interconnected while at the same time preserving the investment in and the autonomy of each individual component The research described here speci cally focuses on two key aspects of this how to discover the location and content of relevant nonlocal information units and how to identify and resolve the semantic heterogeneity that exists between related information in di erent database compo nents Our approach serves as a basis for the sharing of related concepts through partial meta data conceptual schema uni cation without the need for a global view of data We demonstrate and evaluate our approach using the Remote Exchange ex perimental prototype system which supports information sharing and exchange from the above perspective

Security Enforcement in the DOK Federated Database System

The Distributed Object Kernel (DOK) is a federated database system currently under development at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. One of the issues currently under study is the development of a federated access control, as well a secure logical architecture allowing the DOK system to enforce federated security policies in the context of autonomous, distributed and heterogeneous dat...

Flexible Generation of Global Integrated Schemata using GIM

The integration of schemata is a very essential but also a very complex task in a federated database environment. Especially the integration of diierent inheritance hierarchies into one hierarchy is not satisfactorily solved up to now. We show, why some existing approaches fail and propose a new algorithm, which further meets the demand for complete, correct and minimal integrated schemata. Fur...

The Reengineering of Relational Databases Based on Key and Data Correlations

This paper addresses the problem of recovering object-oriented schemata from relational databases. Solutions to this problem are particularly useful for designing wrappers for federated database systems. Our goal here is to describe a reverse engineering methodology for the DOK federated database system (Tari et al. 1996), enabling the wrappers to express relational schemata as object-oriented ...

A UML/OCL Framework for Design of Mediated Data Federations

This paper describes a general semantic framework for precise specification of so-called mediating systems; such systems provide for tight coupling on a global level of a collection of heterogeneous component databases to a federated database. A mediating system maps in a uniform and systematic manner the underlying database schemas of the component systems to a separate, newly defined integrat...

A metadata approach to multimedia database federations

Recent research in federated database systems has advanced in the direction of federations of multimedia databases. However, in each project studied, there has been little emphasis placed on the subject of meta-models. Conversely, standard database systems (relational, object-relational and object-oriented) define metadata models that lack multimedia and federation features. In this paper, a sp...
